Default zig zag (tackle twill) edge on an outline or shape?

I got the recent issue of PrintWear magazine today and was looking at a photo of a cool 3d print that was made to look like it was embroidered (but it was screenprinted). If you have the magazine it's at the top of page 36 in the Jan 2008 issue.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the zig zag edge like you see in the white in that image. If you don't have it to look at, they took some text in blue, dropped a grey outline or contour behind it, and then a larger white contour or outline behind that. The only thing is that the white outline that's the back layer has a zig zag type edge that makes it look like a piece of tackle twill.

I guess it sort of looks like the white zig-zag in this image. In the image I'm trying to emulate, the white zig-zag is on the edge of a white contour.

Anyone know how to do this on the edge of an image in CorelDRAW X3???

Hi!
I have just zoomed in and looked at the art. This stitch part was not done by any drawing program. But from what I see, especially at the corners, this stitch pattern was taken out directly from the embroidery digitizing program. At the corners they show some overlapping of stitches which digitizing program exactly does. Till now I have not found any drawing program that can do this.

Corel has a program plug in with an embroidery feature. You can make the entire print look embroidered.

Yes I have the embroidery plugin for corel draw, but it appies the effect to the whole design and cant do just the outline.

you can also create a custom artistic brush stroke in a zig zag pattern and apply it to the path of the letter.

If you use Illustrator, there is one effect thats call Scribble effect. You can put zig zag effect to the line but you need to put effect in one line at a time not the whole object of lines.

I'm using CorelDraw X3. I tried the custom brush idea, but realized I need something to continuously zig zag all the way around the contour. For those of you that don't get the magazine or think I've lost my mind, I just scanned the photo I'm talking about so you'll see a photo of the print below. You can see the white contour or outline on the bottom layer of the text in the closeup. Some of you may think this is all embroidered, but it's not. It's screen printed to appear as if it's embroidered. Looks like the blue was some sort of high square or 3d ink and then the stitching was printed on to that.

But again, what I'm trying to figure out is how to get that zig-zag edge in CorelDraw X3 like you see here on the white portion. Any guesses after seeing it?

Here's another design by the same designer. By the way, it's by K.C. Hruby. His stuff pretty much rules. He designs for Burton, Gravis and plenty of other big name players. But here's another design using the same edge effect on a screen print. It's that black edge I'm trying to figure out. I'm actually getting close with some ideas using a reversed out dotted outline with rounded edges/ends...

The answer may just be doing it by hand.

Yup, I'm thinking that embroidery software might be your only hope.

Actually, The plugin can also do only the outline. Just make a copy of the first image, don't put any fill inside (left click on the X on the color pallete), just the outline (right click on the color you want), adjust the thickness as necessry, then apply the embroidery effects plug-in. It automatically applies a zig-zag effect when the outline is thicker, say, 1mm above, and applies a running stitch for thinner outlines. just use the "light settings".

If you put any fill inside, the plug-in creates a filled stitches effect. One caution though, if you do large graphics, and you use a RIP software when printing, it takes considerable time to do so. (coz its a bitmap effect).

I use to do these a lot on some of our basketball jersey projects but the long rip time and the high MB requirement is a turn off. Now, I just do what "fluid" suggested in one of his sites: I use a thin font small letter "v", (Eras Lt), and "fit that text to path". Works great, 'coz it's also vector, rips right away.
