Default Starting new document

Howdy,
Illustrator newbie. (CS2)
When starting it up for a new doc it ask for colour mode.
Which should it be CMYK or RGB ? I thought i read somewere design in RGB and print CMYK but not sure if thats right or I misread (probably that). Or have it backwards.

Not screen printing but for CLT and heat transfers if that matters.

Thanks
Mark

Hey Mark,

You've got it absolutely right. Honestly though, I would just always keep the Illustrator file in CMYK, because that way you will (almost) always have the same colors to compare between your monitor and the physical copy. RGB documents will tend to have a brighter feel to them, which varies depending on the monitor settings and changes between monitors, but they almost always look different when printed. If you keep always your documents in CMYK mode, you almost always should be fine when comparing colors.

RGB mixes light (your monitor) to make the image. Red Green and Blue.... CMYK mixes ink to make the image. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black.

RGB has a wider color gamut, which means you have a greater variety of colors available in the spectrum. BUT, since you will be printing to a device that uses CMYK, staying with CMYK in Illustrator will yield closer to WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) results.
