Default [Illustrator] - Erasing from an object outline

Hi guys,
I have a question.. I have a tree that i made. I reduced the opacity to about 20%

Then i created a little tree, and copy and pasted that and made up about 400 all aligned. I then dragged them over the first object.

Now i want to erase the existing little trees and have the remaining little trees make up the first object. But dont know how to do that other than using the eraser by hand. But that is too difficult. Any ideas?

Brian

sounds like you're in need of a clipping mask.

your first tree is on the bottom layer. then take all the little trees and move them to another layer on top of that. then make a copy of the bottom layer and place it directly on top of the layer with the little trees (it has to be lined up exactly with the bottom layer). you now have three layers. then select the top two layers at the same time (large tree + little trees) and go to Object>Clipping mask>make (Command + 7)

that should do the trick.

you can also look up clipping mask in the help section of illustrator for a more detail description.

i suppose you could trace the tree image with the pen tool that would create the path you would use for your clipping mask.

i might suggest you try doing this in photoshop. illustrator is not the best program to manipulate raster images. you want to use illustrator for vector graphics and photoshop for raster graphics like the one you've pasted.

you can basically do the same thing in photoshop with a layer mask.
