Hey Carl.
I would say just sketch, sketch, sketch. Create a version with all of the elements you have in mind, then move them around, resize them, even pull them out of the design to see if it makes it stronger or weaker. In other words, just play with it. Another option is to "ignore" it; take a walk, a shower, or even sleep on it, sometimes your subconscious will kick the perfect solution out when you least expect it.

I also found this set of tips that you might find helpful:

Good Luck.

or....take a walk thru your local grocery store - yep i said grocery store! best place in the world for design inspiration! talk about advertising overload! HUGE quantity of highly qualified and over paid designs utilizing endless marketing research anywhere on the planet!

walk down and aisle and notice what catches your eye (no, don't go hungry, everything will look good and defeat the purpose of the exercise! LOL)

notice the layout, the fonts, the color combinations - WHY does that particular label catch your eye? what is it that makes it pleasing - or not so pleasing? what about the graphics and the way they're presented?

grocery stores are good for more than milk & bread! they're a veritable banquet of design inspiration!

Thats funny because I always walk through the grocery store looking at the packaging and getting ideas. Glad to hear I am not the only one. lol
Most of our designs are asian influenced so I actaully got an idea yesterday for a design from the TAZO green tea boxes. Almost every design we have created took more than one sitting, so if we just come to a stand still, we sleep on it and get back to it when another idea comes up. We also play around with the design in PS CS2 and half the time not knowing what each tool does and before you know it you stumble upon a tool that makes the design ever better than I imagined.

For our new website, I sketched each page over and over and last night my wife started designing the layout in PS so I can give it to a web designer. So I think both sketching it first or just starting in a program with a graphic and playing around with different fonts, sizes, etc will work.
