Default I can't get the eraser to work!?!

Can someone please explain why when I use the eraser, the area I just erased popped back up? In other words, it will erase while I am holding the mouse down to do it, but as soon as I let off the mouse, everything I just erased goes right back. How can I erase??? Thanks!

This is from Adobe Help Center ...

Quote:
- Select the object.
- Select the Erase tool.
- Drag the tool along the length of the path segment you want to erase (not across the path). For best results, use a single, smooth, dragging motion.

Note: You can not use the Erase tool on text or meshes.
I've been using Illustrator since 1993 and I never realized there was an erase tool. I don't understand why you'd even need it. Seems easier to use the direct select tool to select the points you want gone and hit "delete".

They just came out with the erase tool in CS2 I believe. I can see some uses for it. Personally I haven't used it. I just gave it a whirl, and it seems like it affects the "line" instead of the "object". IN other words, if you drag the eraser over an object, expecting it to erase what you are touching, you'll get nohing. But if you drag it along the line or the outline of the object, it will erase that segment.

This is exactly the problem. It will ONLY erase the line, but nothing inside the line.

Ok, since that won't work, then let me ask how to fix this....

I have a circle that I want to have a transparent background...behind that is a lightening bolt going from top to bottom...I don't want the lightening bolt showing through the circle. The design is going on a white tshirt. I don't want to fill the circle with white...so, I tried to erase the part of the lightening bolt that was showing from behind...but as stated above, that didn't work.

I don't want to fill it with white to mask it because I am using f&m expressions and if there is white there, they will print it with the white. Is there a way to fix this in illustrator? Thanks for your help!

Okay I *think* I know what you're trying to do and it sounds like you need to use the pathfinder tool.

Make sure the lightning bolt is on top of the circle. Select both the bolt and the circle. Go to 'Effect > Pathfinder > Minus back"

Let me know if that doesn't work.

I think the best way to handle that, would be to use the knock-out function. Without having the file right in front of me, it is hard to say exactly what you would have to do. But I will give it a shot:

Make a copy of the circle, maybe o another layer, in the same place it is already. Hide it.

Select the old circle and the bolt. GO to Effect>Pathfinder>Subtract. Then Object>Expand Apperance.

This should take the cirle out of the bolt, then unhide your copied circle.

I'd also consider using a different printer, since none of this extra work you're having to do would be necessary if they didn't add their own unnecessary requirements to a perfectly good art file.
