Default How to cut out a piece of my design??

Hi everyone.

I need help. I am trying to create the look of a piece broken out of my design. For example, I have a circle and want to give it the appearance that a chunk broke off one side. So, the edges will be jaggedy and then also create a few little broken off pieces around that.

How do I do that so the broken piece matches the circle where it broke off? The broken piece will be flying away from the circle (so, it is not just a crack). Thanksssss!

This will be tough to describe how to do, but I'll try. Let's use your "circle" example:

1.) Draw the circle.
2.) Draw pieces on top of the circle that you want to be "broken" off.
3.) Make sure your "PATHFINDER" palette is open.
4.) Select all. (Ctrl+A, Apple+A on Mac)
5.) In your PATHFINDER palette click the DIVIDE button. (If you hover over the buttons with your mouse it will tell you the name of the action.)
6.) You can then ungroup your image, and move the pieces around using your direct selection tool. You will also be able to rescale the pieces to show them "flying away".

Hope this helps!

Ann
