Default How to approach my first heat press job?

Got my first job quote request. They want three text lines, large, on the front of a hoodie. First, is the best way to do this with three lines of pre-spaced name transfers in a film? Also, pricing ????? in embroidery I charge mainly by the stitch count, pretty cut and dry. Haven't a clue how to charge for this. I think people expect printed clothing to be less expensive than embroidery, but when I work up numbers it comes out about the same, but I'm not sure if I am overcharging. I was thinking: hoodie $8 + transfers $5 (these first two include shipping) + labor $5 = $18 for the hoodie. That is basically what I charge wholesale for full front embroidered hoodies. Am I too high?? too low??? Thanks for your help

If you are working with vinyl then I would look at what it cost you per inch and then figure the size of the decoration and multiply by 5. Example if the vinyl is $45 for 5 yards and it is 19 x 180 (5 yards) that equals 3420 sq inches. or a cost of 1.3 cents per inch. x 5 that will give you 6.5 cents to charge. if the design is 12 x 10 including margin that equals 120 sq. inches. the charge for the vinyl then would be 7.80 plus the garment which I assume you would add at least $3.00 over cost. so if hood cost you 9.00 then you add 9. + 3. + 7.8 which = 19.80. Your profit= $9.24. Vinyl is labor intensive. Your profit should be more than screening.

OK, i'm going to really show my ignorance now....is vinyl the same as different graphic product companies are calling "film"? I don't have my own cutter, I have to order it out. so what IS the best material to use on a sweatshirt and is the best way to do the three lines of text is to order as 3 separate lines of pre-spaced names? Thats what I was recommended.

yes it is.. I would not use digital transfers if you want repeat business. I would use plastisol transfers but with only 3 pieces that will be expensive. If you could get someone with a vinyl cutter to do the cuts for you that would work. keep in mind though it would be one color.

The order is for more like 35 to 40 pieces. Its for three lines of text. I was told to order it as three separate lines of pre-spaced names in the film. Is that the best way to do it? That way its $1.50 a line or $4.50 for the whole design. Ok, and here's my ignorance again...is film, vinyl AND platisol ALL the same thing?

No, viyl is just that. A sheet of plastic. Plastisol is an ink. Vinyl needs to be cut and weeded. Plastisol needs to be printed. 3 seperate line? I don't get it. Send me what you are doing. maybe then i can make a better understanding of it. (email me)
