I am totally new to T-shirt production. So be gentle with me !!
i look on places like Istockphoto for my ddesgins to go on the front of my shirts, and i change them very slightly using photoshop, which is fine. But..
I am getting a company to do the screenprints for me but just was thinking about a really basic question, when i purchase the extended license from istockphoto and get the design , the screenprinters will be able to put this on the shirt won't they? I mean they dont need all the colours to be separated do they?

Yes they will. They really can't screen print pictures if that is what you have. At least not very cheaply. it would requre many color screens. Most screen printers demand art ready, which mean it is in vector format. Lou
I understand the concept of vector designs, but wouldn't know how to separate the colours. If all my designs are vectors would this make it easier for my screenprinters to deal with?
I talked with my screenprinters when i initally inquired, and said all my desgins would be vectors but they didn't say anything about needing the design to be separated. Maybe they just presumed i knew what i was doing.... Major mistake !!LOL
Don't feel bad about asking questions. Trust me, even those of us who sometimes feel like we could give Methuselah a run for their money, still have questions.
The shouldnt need to be vectorized, but should be a nice clean image for the (screen)printer to scan, they should have the software to separate. printers vary with what the need so you should ask them.

Vector designs are more or less separated automatically, it's a large part of why they're popular. They may need to do a small amount of work to get it print ready (and might charge for it if so), but not a lot.

To print any design onto a shirt, it needs to be separated. Especially photos. Vector artwork would be easier to handle.
One thing you might want to check as well, is that you have the right to use these images on a shirt, as iStockPhoto has different licensing schemes.
