I've never really been an artsy person, so i cdon't really draw that well, but i like designing stuff, i just can't get the design out of my head and on to paper someimes. but my other issue is that i have no ideas just sitting in my head. how do u go about designing your designs? or at least thinking of them? they just pop into your head? hows this work? thanks
I am not an artist, either. I have fought artist brain cramps all my life. It's particular difficult now with a specific style of art I want to print on my retail shirts. For the stuff I have designed so far, it's looking over thousands of artwork we've purchased and finding one that SPARKS something in my head ... and go from there. I can get about 3 designs a day doing it this way. Another trick when I am absolutely blocked is to simply pick a theme ... like, western - what can I do with cowboys, horses, etc.
Sometimes, I get an idea that POPS into my head ... I immediately right it down (I have note pads everywhere in the house). Especially useful when drinking late at night.
Most important than anything else ... design something every single day, even if it's crap.
Sometimes it "POPS" (thats a big pop) into my brain. Then if I dont write it (the idea) down I'll forget. Then I sit either with pencil and paper and sketch it out, or muddle around with on the pc, then give it to my husband, and get him to make it do what I want Example, I wanted vines around a specific sign we were doing. After we got the initial ok from the customer, and he liked what he orginally saw. So I brought the idea up to him he loved the idea. So I drew, and redrew it until I was happy with it. (I was soooooo nervous about this job! It was something that I had in my head, and couldnt really show him what I wanted to do).......anyway, I drew it all out, finally had it the way I wanted it, then gave it to my husband to work the computer magic I needed to make it work with sign vinyl.
Other times, I'll just be cruising the net, and see something I like.....fiddle with it until I make it mine. Example......our business logo is a compilation of about 4-6 different buffalo logos and one really long boring conference call Once again, hubby took my drawing, and made it look what I wanted to look like.
cool, thats a good idea Michael, about just choosing a theme and running with it. i'll definitely try that out. so even though i'm probably the worst illustrator/drawer ever, i guess just throwing it on a piece of paper and keeping it will help a lot, and could help spark a new better idea.

I also have a hard time trying to come up with ideas but what I usually like to do is check out other companies designs and try to spin off from what they have and change it up into something different. Another thing I like to do is flip through catalogs and get ideas, I rip the page out and put it aside to re-create something. I also had a co-worker who works with Photoshop work on a design of mine but I let him just go to town and do what came to his mind to create what I wanted too.
