Along with the poll post tell us why you use one or the other...
This post is NOT ment to start the Corel V Illy debate so please refrain from railing on one or the other.. this is just an open forum for eductational purposes and enlightenment for all.
Well, people might be getting a little tired of this discussion. There are two other threads about this, including this one here: WHY do you use the software you use?
I meant to add a poll to that one, but I didn't see the option after I forgot to add one when I submitted it. I was going to add other programs, tho.
As for why I use CorelDRAW: I find it EXTREMELY easy to use and at least as powerful as Illustrator. I've used Illy since version 8, and always found it frustratingly difficult to do seemingly simple things in it. So much so that instead of Illustrator, I started using 3d Studio MAX for all my vector work and then IMPORTING that into Illy.
My Fiance moved up here about a year ago, and about six months ago I started really paying attention to what his workflow was like. It was very impressive to me what he was doing in such a short amount of time. Of course, some of the is experience, but a lot of it is the program he was using. CorelDRAW 12.
My dad offered to buy CorelDRAW X3 for Mark as an early birthday present, and Mark was REALLY impressed with the new features. I decided to download the 15 day trial of X3 after hearing all the ooh's and ahh's coming from Mark.
Once I started playing with it, I was absolutely hooked! As a matter of fact, I was so into it I was teaching Mark something new about X3 every day for the entire time I was trying it. He's up to speed now.
Mark downloaded the trial version of Illy, and he could barely do anything in it. Okay, he didn't give it a LOT of effort, but he felt that he shouldn't need to to do what he wants, and I agree.
With some of X3's built-in features, along with additional macros, I know I'll be using it along side my 3ds MAX for my 3d work. There are some things with shapes that MAX can't do that X3 can, and vice versa. So I'll be using those in unison. The irony is that in order to transfer files between the two programs, I'll need to save files as AI files.
I use CorelDraw because of the embroidery effect plug-in and Tom's (advance artists') t-shirt comp plug-in. Later on, I might purchase CorelDrawings also, for embroidery digitizing.
but have used illy longer and use it more.. at the sign shop one of the computers has corel and signlab on it.. for using with the older graphec plotter we make signs with.. the other computer has illy and photoshop and versaworks for using with the versacamm printer.. and the puter that sits on my desk has illy and photoshop and the software for the roland plotter ..
I never learned how to do the cut line for making the print and cut stickers on corel. its really easy in illy.. but i am trying to find the time to work a bit more in corel.. .. We deal with so many businesses art that it really pays to have both programs..
I use Illustrator because:
• I like to pay more for my product.
• I like the name. It explains what it does. What is it to CorelDraw?
• It's very difficult to use - I like the challenge.
• It comes with barely anything.
• It's not a t-shirt industry standard - I like to be different.
• It sparks endless debates like, which is better, what came first the chicken or the egg, what do you use, etc.
• It's a Conservative Republican (actually I am not sure if this statement is true, but who cares!)
• I was atracted to the original artwork of Venus on it's splash page.

Hi, glad to see someone that uses versaworks for printing banners and making stickers. We just go the machine at our shop about a month ago.
Can you tell me how you make a cut line in illustrator, as I have been making stickers and I am pretty new to illustrator?
I use illustrator because I like to get all worked up when people complain that it's too hard to use and they've never bothered to crack open the manual or take a class.
I use illustrator because Corel makes Wordperfect and I HATED Wordperfect when I was forced to use it on a daily basis years ago.
I use illustrator because you have to be smarter than the software to be able to use it.
I use illustrator because I know how to use the pen tool.
I use illustrator because my designs never span more than one page.
I use illustrator because it runs on the mac. I don't own a mac, but I like the idea of macs.
I use illustrator because CS3 costs as much as a new mac laptop, which I would like to buy but I can't because I own illustrator.
I use illustrator because it's teh l33t w00t.

Please stop posting these useless threads. We don't care what software you use. Really!
Illustrator and CorelDraw are equivalent packages. It doesn't matter which one you use.
Lol! Jose, are you really mad, and another thread-killah "in training"? I don't think it's useless as I might find a feature/function on the other software that will make me switch to it! Peace Man!
Well it looks like its about 50/50 so far.. I really did not want to start a debate I was just curious about the market shares in this industry. I have heard different numbers over the years but wanted to see some actual data. There is actually not enough data here for a very accturate estimate yet but it should be pretty close in the long run...
