i can do index color but i've been seeing a lot of photo prints that are done with halftones instead of indexed dots. it doesn't seem like they are done just by doing select color range. is this something fastfilms does or are there any online tutorials?

Fluid

FastFilms will do Simulated process as well as many Index options, black and white, sepis tone and some other goodies.
You still need an understanding of separations and photoshop in order to get a good separation.
Just pressing the button will get a decent sep yet tweaking will make it that much more :-)
