I would think the type of printer you should get would be based on the end use...transfers, dye sub...or.... I prefer Okidata for a lot but I also have a KM and Brother.

you might be interested in a xante

Xanté Support - ScreenWriter 4

these aren't cheap and i don't know of any "entry-level" lazer printers, but this will do what you want without a rip software.

honestly, i was never thrilled with the quality of this printer. i used it for about 2 years before we purchased an Epson Stylus Pro 4000 and a Wasatch RIP. we get much better results with our films now with this printer.

if you don't intend on doing mult-colored, tight registration jobs, you would do fine with a xante.

I have an old Xante 8300 and its still running strong after almost 10 years. I like Kenn quickly switched to a better plate maker as the laser will give you headaches with registration due to shrinking. Get an epson and rip as you'll ultimately save money.

As far as lasers you'll need to make sure it is post script, if not you'll need a rip.

Epson is the best route other than thermal and true imagesetters.
