Red face How detailed can an .ai file be for screening?

I am brand new in the t-shirt industry and starting my own company. I am working on the designs right now in Adobe Illustrator, and was curious as to how detailed I can make the design for screen printing? If I do a 1 pt wide line design, would that come out ok? I understand that I would have to have the screen printers get a finer screen? And how much more expensive would that be, estimatingly? Thanks!

1 point is pushing it, but would most likely work. I'd do 2 point to be safe.

I don't believe that you'd be stuck paying a fee for more detailed work though. Check out some of our many forum sponsors, such as Mr.4ColorProcess or Nathan at F&M Expressions.

Maybe you could ask the screen printer who will print your shirts.
He knows what screen uses and by experience he can tell you the minimum stroke weight.

depends on the inks being printed, the printer and their equipment.
too small of detail might get lost during burning (lines smaller than .5pt)

As Fred mentioned it may be best to send the art to your printer and discuss any issues that may arise
