Default Staying between lines

How does use a dodge tool to put a pattern from one picture onto a constrained area of another area without messing up the pattern?

I thought by messing with layers I could go outside the line boundaries on one layer but put a layer ontop of it.

Using the filter extractI couldn't do it either but I have to be doing something wrong because I know it's pretty easy to do.

Are you trying to make a *shape* that is the pattern your trying? Sounds like you need to make a "quickmask" onto that layer that has your pattern on it.

Bassed on my photoshop experiance, the dodge tool doesnt have anything to do with what you're talking about. Are you perhapse thinking of the clone tool since you say you are saying you want to sample a pattern from annother layer? The above post is right that you can use a mask to control whats visable on a layer. If you havent checked out photoshop forums first you should see what they have to say.
