I placed a image into illustrator cs2 and there is a big x across it.
What does this mean. ?

It indicates a placed image file if the image is selected. Click on the workspace next to the pic and it's gone

This has happened to me also. I downloaded a file from brandsoftheworld.com, opened it in CorelDraw and printed it. There was a large "hairline" wide "X" across the printed image.

it is a placed eps as LOOT mentioned. Try importing or bringing into ILly another way if possible.
