Just wanted to get some thoughts and ideas on this logo, the one on the right side of the graphic below. It's for a Disc Golf club and I just think its ugly and could be better. I am just having an artist block on what I can do.
Maybe some of yall can help me think of something to do with it or something different based off of it.
The only requirements would be to have a flying disc (frisbee) and the web address. The area the club is in is called the "Golden Triangle" in Texas, so a play on that would be good too. This logo is to be used on the website and on all club printing including letterheads (b&w version probably ) and tshirts etc.
Yeah, that logo is a little bulky and doesn't really flow.
-You could have an actual golden triangle (or the state outline) with a disc ripping through the center at an angle to look like it's coming at you.
-Or an upside-down triangle becoming the basket.
- Or the state outline spinning like it's turning into a disc.
Start with a pencil or pen and a sketch pad and sketch sketch sketch. Sketch or write ideas down as they come to you. Doesn't even matter if the sketches look good, your just brain dumping, getting ideas out of your head and onto paper. Get a solid concept together that defines the company and refine it.
Then, once you've got a solid concept sketched out, boot up the computer.
Forget all of the shadows, bevels and colors and design in just black and white. No greys, solid black and white. Focus on composition, form, balance, negative space.... If the logo does not work as a one color it does not work at all. At least that's what I was taught and what I still believe.
Once you have a solid one color logo then focus on color. Then you can ... well.... to be honest, really one just should not use Bevels, dropshadows, and photoshop effects on logos at all in my opinion.
personally I don't think what you have there is so bad. It could work as a one color just as well as a color piece. Just drop the effects from it. The text inside of the texas image is a bit small and wont hold up if the logo is shrunk down to business card size, faxed on a letter head, or embroidered on the left chest of a polo, so if you can maybe drop that out. Is it essential info?

This isnt my design. This is a design that was given to the webmaster of the club's site and he liked it. The club decided to use this logo on T-shirts and I thought that it wasn't good enough to put on anyones back. I decided that I would try to modify it or change it to make it something better and more print freindly. What I came up with is ...well... nothing. I just cant seem to come up with anything at all, good or bad. That is when I decided to post up here and see if any of the creative minds that come here could offer alittle help. I usually dont have any problems creating artwork for logos but this one has just stumped me.
Personally I hate the logo and believe it is very amatuer looking (not to mention not screen print freindly) and a few of the people on the board of the club agree.
The design has a black and white version with just the outlines. Not good, it is still very amatuer looking imo and i dont think color of any sort would help it. The design just doesnt flow right at all.
Thanks for the help and advice guys. If you got more keep it coming!

i can't tell you how many shirts we've printed that i don't like the design and thought "you know what would be better..." it's enough to drive you crazy!
i have found that the best thing is to disassociate yourself with the shirt. i tell myself "i'm not wearing it, so what does it matter to me"
if your customer likes it and approves it...print it.

Yup. I've had some pretty horrid artwork and 'logo's" land on my desk for sure, stuff that makes your logo look like it was designed by Milton Glaser himself.
I'd love to take more stock in some of the stuff I am sent, hell, even some of the original artwork I do, but being the only artist with three sales people throwing "need it by yesterdays" on my desk all day everyday, well it's just tough.
I can't tell you how many times I make something decent only to hear "can you make the text larger" can you make the text all caps and italic.." "can you (shudder) stretch all of the text up taller" "can you center everything", "can you arch it" "can you make the font (gasp..) COMIC SANS"
For the love of god people, everything does not have to be ALL CAPS!!!!

Makes me want to strangle somebody. I'm still learning how to do it, but I think Add is 100% correct. Disassociate, send a proof, get approval, output film and hand it off to the screen burner. On to the next.
But I suppose it's too late for that now, as you've already suggested a redesign.
Well my brain started working again and i finally got somehting I can live with.
Just to reply to the last cuple of posts. This is a club that I am in so I will be owning one of the shirts and having to use the logo for various things. Here is the logo i came up with...
