Default Resizing without the stroke weight going berzerk!

Hello Everyone,

Here is an issue I have always had in Illustrator that I am hoping there is a easy solution to. Say I create a design in the actual size it will be for a shirt. Once created I sometimes have need to reduce the design size in order to put it on an order form for people to see the design. If you go in and scale the design, the stroke weights do not scale in relation to the design and I have to zoom in and adjust the stoke weights manually.

Anyone know a way I can prep the art prior to scaling in order to prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

Jon

Sure... the trick is 'expanding' all your strokes, so they become objects themselves!
How to? Select a stroked object, look at the top nav bar and click on Object > Expand... and a small window will open. If you only want the stroke to expand than make sure that 'stroke' is the only thing thats checked, and it will expand the stroke so it will constrain proportions when resizing

Under your general preferences there is an option that says : scale strokes and effects. That'll fix your problem if you don't want to create them to shapes.

Thanks,
Offcourse Identityburn's solution is a good one too and even might be somewhat easier. But for some reasons I've never liked to work with strokes that much. Sometimes I'll rather expand, clean up and do some trimming when the overlap is just to much.

If you double click on the scale button and scale by percentage, there's an easy tick box to select the scale strokes option at the same time.

You can also turn the thing into a symbol,
though sometimes it gives compatibility problems with other versions.
