i realize this isn't a graphic question, but i figure there are enough mac users that browse this section that maybe someone would have a suggestion. i've had some issues with my mac that are too lengthy to get into, so i need to do some hard drive repairs. does anyone use TechTools, Disk Warrior or any other disk utility for mac? what kind of results have you had? i've seen so many mixed reviews and these aren't cheap programs. any suggestions would really help.
thanks, i appreciate your input.

Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
When I first started out (os 7.x) I used Norton. It wasn't bad, but I think there were a few hiccups with it. Ever since OSX, I haven't really used anything. I heard some people say that Norton can cause problems. I will say that I have had hard drive crash and not boot up or get recognized and I have used Norton to rescue them (whew!). I used TechTool here and there, but I have used Norton more. I have also used the Macs own Disc Utilities and it works good.
What problems are you having?

Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
Disk Warrior has worked some awesome voodoo for me in the past and got me out of situations that, frankly, should have killed the OS dead. Before I upgraded to the new OSX4, I made sure I had a disk warrior disk nearby. Even the good ranch hands at the apple store near me said they use DW on their machines. If you get to where you need it, then it Can't hurt trying it I say. Good luck with the bad mac blues....

i hope you don't regret asking this...
my biggest issue is with e-mail. we use thunderbird for our office e-mail and i am only able to receive but not send. i get the spinning rainbow wheel of death. i have to rely on our web-mail right now and it is a real pain.
many system preferences will not launch (accounts, disk utilities), as with a few application (all osx related) like text edit & stickies. safari will not launch but firefox and ie have no problems.
i have now tried two different hard drives, both of which i have performed clean installations of the os. i have also tried switching out RAM thinking it might be a bad memory stick. still no change.
i've also ran the AHT, but since that really didn't do anything, i'm thinking of an alternative disk utility to run.
occasionally (maybe every few days), out of nowhere, everything will work just fine with no problems what so ever.
i'm completely stumped.
hope i didn't put you to sleep.

Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
Use both tech tool pro and disk warrior, both have solved problems that I thought were not solvable.
If you have any firewire drives on your system shut everything down for a half hour, pull the plugs! Have seen this solve some weird firewire related problems, the plugs must be pulled, not just a shut down, all devices including the cpu.
If that does not help, then go the permissions repair, disk warrior, tech tool route.
Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
I agree, uplug, reboot, then repair permissions..
incorrect permission settings could cause this symptom. See technical document 106712 "Mac OS X: Troubleshooting Permissions Issues" on the
apple site for information on checking permission settings.
Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
These are some weird issues. I haven't used Thunderbird. I did try setting it up once and was having problems with it. At home and at work I use Entourage, and it works pretty good. Are you running a relatively new machine? I run a G4 at home (OSx.4) and it runs pretty decent, but I could see older machines struggling. When you did clean installs, did you run the machine without adding any programs or old files back, just to see if it could be something else that is tainting it?

i'm running a PowerMac G5 1.6 GHz w/1G RAM os10.3.9 i have no firewire devises connected, i'm networked to all our printers.
yeah, my next step is to re-install the os with no applications or files to see what happens. the problem i have with that is the time it takes. i've got a production dept i have to keep running, too.
thanks, everyone for the advise & links. i'll try all of your suggestions. at least i can be confident that the problem does not lie somewhere between the keyboard and the back of my chair .
i'll keep ya posted on the progress.

Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
disk warrior's worked well for me in the past. i bagged norton with X as it was causing problems, as someone said.
i second the repair permissions suggestions. you could also try creating a new user and see if the problems persist when that one is logged in. if you have something like cocktail (a utility for running various system maintence thingers), it couldn't hurt to run that as well.
Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
Would also update your OS to 10.4.9 lots of problems went away with the current updates. Their are also some very valid security issues that your current S/W level does not address.

unfortunately, one of the issues i have is that i cannot create a new account. many of the system preferences crash when i try to open them.

i was holding out for 10.5 leopard that should be released pretty soon. but, yes, i do need to update.
anyway, i got my copy of diskwarrior this morning. ran it and still no change in my problems. i'm not sorry i purchased it, though. i've been needing a good disk util for a while now.
next i'll be doing another clean install of the os with no applications or files. if that doesn't work, i may have to call in a mac specialist ($$$).
wish me luck!

Re: Can anyone suggest a good disk utility for Mac?
I concur, Disk Warrior is the way to go. I do a lot of video editing and have several terabytes of storage and it has helped me to keep many issues from arising and also warn me when drives are starting to fail..which in that line of work can really save your arse.
