You can get started by outsourcing the artwork if your designs are a bit too complicated for your current level of knowledge. That way you can learn as you're selling.

There are lots of freelance artists out there who can create t-shirt designs from the ideas in your head (and you keep full rights). Places like designoutpost.com, guru.com, ifreelance.com, elance.com, etc. Even right here in our own forums (by posted a Service Needed ad in the classifieds).

If you definitely want to do it yourself, you can find some great tips and illustrator information in this forum and ask any questions you might have on any specific feature.

a visual quick start guide will be good for illustrator but the real hard part is the pen tool. most people will draw on paper then scan it in and trace in illustrator. the pen tool is your worst enemy and best friend. it sucks for the 1st year or so.

I got a training DVD off eBay and learned somewhat quickly, as seems much easier to learn when you actually WATCH someone using the software. And yea, the PEN tool is hell itself. You should be able to learn ill in a few months time with a good video instruction pack no problem(google search too, some free tutorial videos out there as well). Good Luck!
