Default Designing High Urban/Fashion Shirts-I Got ?'s

First off i've done some searching of the forum, other forums, and the rest of the internet, and made a thread earlier about somethings but didnt quite get the response i wanted.

Im looking to create shirts and designs that compete in the same market as famous stars and straps, obey, artful dodger, beautiful decay, hurley, affliction and the like. From what i've gathered most of these brands print on blended tee's like 50/50 cotton and polyester or cotton and rayon, or 100 percent cotton. And concerning allover printing, which alot of them do, it seems that the services for this will be expensive and hard to find so i will probably hold off for a while. but the questions i do have are as follows:

Can I Design in Photoshop and if I can what resolution and format do they need to be in and any other specifics?

If I have to design in Illustrator what resolution and format do they need to be in?

What is all this talk about the weights of shirts?

How do i go about getting the whole front of a t-shirt screen printed? do printers charge extra for these type of designs?

Thank you to anyone whole helps me out with this, after weeks of trying to figure all this out i just finally decided to try this to get some sure fire answers.

yes, you can design in PS. always save your images at 300dpi at actual size. save as TIF or PSD.

illustrator is a vector based program, so resolution is not an issue. this is one reason i prefer to design in illustrator, personally. you can save your images as AI or EPS.

someone please correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe the weight is actually what a square yard of the fabric weighs. the heavier the weight, the thicker the fabric. colored shirts weigh more, obviously.

check with your screenprinter. they will advise you on the best method for your designs. often, oversize images will require larger screens that will sometimes cost more.

Ken pretty much covered it above

Sometimes this is done with the same printers that would do an "all over" print (a belt style screen printer).

The basics of it is, when you put a t-shirt on, some t-shirts feel "heavier" or "thicker" than other t-shirts. For example, a "Hanes Beefy Tee" is going to feel heavier and thicker than an "American Apparel" t-shirt. They are different weights. The hanes beefy tee is a 6.1 ounce t-shirt, whereas an american apparel is less than 5 ounces. In the US, we use ounces to tell the different shirt weights apart.

Designer/fashion t-shirts are usually lighter weight t-shirts, sometimes called "vintage" t-shirts. Around 4-5 ounces usually.

artful doger? i didnt know that was the name of a clothing brand. i believe that was a character in the charles dickens novel Oliver Twist. he went out like a real gangsta in the book.
