Need to Register?

I'm trying to wrap up some designs to get my first transfers printed up and I've hit a bump. How wide should they be? I'm trying to find a middle ground so that they will look good both on men's and women's sizes. I'm considering using two sizes (even though it will cost more) so the two extremes don't look all weird.

I will be printing from XS to 2XL. The artwork is text on the back side. Thus far I've been doing vinyl and inkjet so I've been able to size up and down on the fly. My eyes tell me that 9" works well from XS-M and 12" looks ok for L-2XL. 10" will probably be acceptable for all.

What rule of thumb do you use for sizing graphics? Do you take into consideration the sizing of the garment? From what I see people wearing, the majority of people don't care too much. I see petite girls wearing shirts with HUGE lettering on the back that wraps around under their arms and giant men sporting teeny logos on theirs.

I do not have any techie suggestion, but I do have a method.
When I'm trying to find out how I want a design to look like positionwise, no matter
whether it's on a tee, on a wall, a car or shop window, I have a look around.
I start checking out what I like and what I don't. You already know what you
don't like, seems to me...
Just go to a shopping centre, find a clothing/sport shop and try to find out
something similar and roughly check size design...
That might lead you somewhere!

I like 10" across (or so) for designs that will be going on a wide range of sizes.

If they get too small (like an XS), it may need to be resized.

But for me, 10 inches works well.

Thanks Rodney, that's what I was thinking.

For designs that will go on a wide range I'm just going to do 2 sizes. The price difference is minimal when you gang them up and get 2 full designs on a sheet.
