I have paint shop pro. Is that basically the same as photoshop or are there huge differences? I was also going to get Corel Draw and saw that Draw 12 was down to $50. Are there things that I need in X3? What can you do in illustrator that you can't do in Draw or Photoshop? What can you do in Draw that you can't do in Illustrator? Draw vs Photoshop?
I noticed that Draw version 12 was down to $50. Does X3 have something that's a good enough reason for me to save a little more money to buy X3 instead. Also, I've read that most of you pro.s use Photoshop, Illustrator, and Draw. What are the reasons for having each?

Tim,
X3 has spot color separation features that are not in Corel 12 so if you are screen printing, YES, get X3. Paint Shop VS PhotoShop you need PhotoShop if you are planning to do high end work.. If you are not planning to do high end work then PhotoPaint in Corel X3 will get 95% of the work done and for about one third of the price of Illustrator and Photoshop.
I have worked in screen printing for over 10 years in my opinion Corel is the best solution, for shops doing the work that makes up 90% of our industries work. I know and use both Illustrator and Corel but for production and design for screen printing Corel is my tool of choice.
There are some fundamental things that Corel does which are specific to screen printing type work and there are very powerful automation features available also in the spot color functions of Corel.
Illustrator has some very powerful design tools that are stronger than Corel’s and I do go to Illustrator for specific effects. But overall I would recommend Corel for basic to intermediate high end designs and production work.

I'm doing plastisol and some light sublimation right now, no screenprinting. Maybe sometime in the future adding a DTG printer. What works best with that?

Plastisol transfers are screenprinted, so creating the artwork for screenprinting and plastisol transfers is essentially the same.
If you have to buy "full" version, you may save money
by purchasing CorelDraw12 Suite and then upgrading to X3.
I'm getting ready to upgrade to X3 because the trace is better.
Price for X3 last year was just under $500. Corel site has it at
$379.
Compare cost to buy CD12 plus upgrade to X3 versus buying X3.
I also use older Photoshop and PhotoImpact.

I wonder why people never mention Adobe's Freehand (formerly Macromedia's Freehand). Thats the one I use. Great program! It is a vector program, just like Illustrator.

Does 12 have Live Trace?
CorelDRAW V12 has CorelTRACE. It comes with the suite and is a stand alone tracing program.
CorelDRAW X3 beefed up the trace now - PowerTRACE (I believe is what they call it) and it is intergrated in Corel and not a stand alone.

I just want to let you know that this info was most helpful. After MUCH consideration I chose Corel X3 and I an most pleased with it. So far it seems very user friendly. Thanks
