Try the "Virtual Segment Delete" instead of weld.

Select all your objects, go to Arrange, Combine. Select Virtual Segment delete from your toolbox (should be with the Crop, Erase, Knife tools). Then click and drag over the parts of the hands you wish to delete.

More than likely the heads inside will be lost if doing a boundary.

Virtual Segment Delete is very similar to a selective weld on multiple objects. Instead of deleting a node which causes the curves to become all malformed, the lines retain their shape when using the VSD tool.

Joeshaul's method should work - although you may still have to zoom in and adjust (using the shape too) where the hands are not smooth due to a small hand and large hand (left side).

I would just change outline to object, the erase unwanted parts.

This won't help you out in the short run, but learning the shape tool will help you in these situations. It is handy when welds don't work the way you want them to.
