Hi Jareeby,
You will find many different opinions on this forum about what's good, and what's not so good. That being said, here's
my opinion.
I have found that
JPSS transfer paper for light colored garments works great. It is not very opaque, so you should only use it on light colors like white, light grey, and near white colors. Transferring to dark color garments is more challenging. Dark transfer paper is 100% opaque (can't see through it) so the transfers are much heavier than light transfers. It may be suitable to use if your designs allow you to contour cut a lot of the material out, so the graphics will be more flexible. I would recommend researching the threads in the heat transfer paper area of the forum for more info. I prefer to use transfer vinyl on dark colors, but this limits me to 2-3 colors on a design. It has a soft hand (smooth to the touch) as if it was a quality silk screened graphic.
You may also want to search for threads on which graphics design program to use. The 3 big players are Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw and a shareware program named Inkscape. I use Illustrator, but this may be a bit pricey to start with if you are on a low budget.
Lastly you may want to look for threads in the Heat press and heat transfer section under sub forum "printers" to decide what printer to use. I use a Epson 1400 with a refillable pigment ink system.
Hope this is enough to get you started,
Good Luck!
