Default Vintage Collective: A resource for vintage graphics

I've always been fascinated (or obsessive) about old book illustrations and over the years my collection of public domain images has grown steadily. I figured other designers might find them useful aswell so I'm planning to offer the images for download. (My site will me up and running shortly)

For now you can see my collection here... Vintage Collective's photosets on Flickr

I've put together a small compilation of some images in different formats. Feel free to use them in your designs (just don't share or sell the files themselves).

Jpg version (2.5 mb, right click to save)

Photoshop brush version (2.8 mb, right click to save)

Vector eps format (9.5 mb, right click to save)

Enjoy =)

These are great. How did you go about verifying these are in the public domain?

I don't know how our friend got these, but steel engraving like this hasn't been done for a very long time.

The duration of copyright is life of the author plus 70 years. Do we know that the author died in 1939 or earlier? I'd be hesitant to use these files unless I could verify their origin. Where did you find these?

Also, if these are in the public domain, why can't I share or sell the files myself? I don't think one can discover a public domain work and claim copyright ownership in it. If the art is in the public domain no one has the right to restrict others' use of the work. Am I wrong?

It's true that you should be really careful using images that might be protected. I'm not an expert in any way, but I've made sure that the images in the collection were published before 1923, which would mean they are now in the public domain. (according to Copyright and Other Restrictions That Apply to Publication/Distribution of Images: Assessing the risk of using a P&P image (Prints and Photographs Reading Room, Library of Congress))

My main sources for these images are

http://www.digital-collections.de/index.html?c=sammlungen&l=en

http://www.hab.de/bibliothek/wdb/emblematica/signaturenliste.htm

http://www.archive.org/index.php

http://www.loc.gov/index.html

Copyright is life of creator plus 70 years if the work was created after 1978.

I don't claim I hold the rights to the images, since they lack originality.

"The act of transferring a work of art from one medium to another is not by itself sufficient to give copyright protection to the copy. Rather, a copy in a new medium is protected by copyright only where the copier makes some identifiable original contribution"

Glad someone mentioned to be cautious with Public Domain Images.
I am totally new to doing this kind of research but I just spent a couple of hours trying to read leagl-eeze about General Public Licensing on this site Wikimedia Commons
There is a lot of red tape to read through and just because something appears as "public domain" doesnt mean its cool to use. In some cases it is ok- even to make commercial profit from it- with proper mention of sources or following certain protocall - but honestly I did not see how that would relate to art on tees? so it was a bit confusing. Can you shed some light on that? Most of the conditions or terms applied to digital media or printed books where its easy to link to the source or give credit. So Im confused about how these things even work. For example, just because someone took a picture of a Triumph sign and posted their picture for all to use, it doesnt mean I can put it on my tee shirts.... Trust me, I wish I could. I am actaully trying to figure out how so many people are able to use so many of the old Logos. Maybe I should start a new thread ......
Thanks. BY the way I love those images! Thanks for sharing them.

If you can determine (after careful research) that the image is in the public domain then there is no need to mention any source or give anyone credits when you put it on a design. Make sure that the image was published in the U.S before 1923 if you want to be certain that the copyright has expired. I would advice you not to use any form of company logo since it is probably still trademarked.
