Default Distressed Method

I've seen a couple of different methods of creating destressed looks in images. Seems like a lot of work for the methods I've seen. I was wondering if anyone has tried using a distressed layer and removed the color with a magic eraser. Below is an example of what I'm talking about. If anyone has used this method do you have a template that you really like or are there templates on the internet?

I put the black and white picture on the horse and rider, used the magic eraser tool to erase the black from that layer and then flattened the image.

in illustrator, put the red rider on top of black distress (even if they are in separate layer), CTRL+7 (to clip)...then ALT+click divide on Pathfinder palette. youll see all the unwanted nodes outside of the red horse gone

You can make your own distress. Google "Textures",. once you find some,. take them into photoshop. Select all and copy. Create a new channel and paste. Highlite the channel and go to Image>adjust>variations,. (or Curves work well also) at the top left you will see the original,. make sure you click the original,. then you can proceed. Say you have a tree bark texture, or cracked earth. Knock the highlights back a couple times,. the midtones a couple times,. increase the shadows,. or whatever works for you. Once you are comfy with the image,. go to image>mode>bitmap. I usually use 50% threshold,. 600dpi for smoother bitmap lines. If you have midtones you want to keep don't use this,. Use halftone screen,. I use 55-50lpi @ 22.5 degress. Save the image as a .tif and you can place the bitmap over the top of any image in illustrator and it will allow you to assign any color to the bitmap.
