Default T-shirt design size/Photshop inquiry

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the whole T-shirt design process, so I'm curious about what size I should aim for in my designs.

Currently I've been using 1200X1600 pixels, roughly 16.5 X 22 inches for all my designs. (They don't fill up that whole space, I am just using that size as a general canvas to work with.) After some browsing around I'm begining to wonder if there's another size I should aim for generally.

In addition to the canvas size, I've also wondered if Photoshop is fine to use when creating designs. Whenever I'm making a design I try to make sure I create separate layers for each color. Is this necessary or am I just creating more work for myself, and restricting myself from using some of the effects of Photoshop?

Any help with the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan.

It's good to design your work in illustrator as you won't be dealing with resolution. Using both photoshop and illustrator for best results is ideal depending on the type of design.

When working in photoshop the key thing to note is resolution in regards to image size. For a good bitmap image you would want no less then 300dpi at the desired final size of the design.

The design size is relevant to the over all look you want on the garment and also the size of garments the design will be printed on.
