Hi. I have an eps file that was emailed to me. When I try to open it in Illustrator CS3, it gives me a message saying "Cannot open the Illustration. The file was generated by a newer version of Illustrator and cannot be opened. Please resave it in a format compatible with your version of Illustrator" What am I supposed to do now? Any ideas how to get around this one?
The files was created in CS4 or CorelDRAW X4 with compatibility mode off apparently. Have the person who sent the file re-save it with maximize compatibility turned on. Then it should work.
open a blank document then hit under file click "place" then find the file and it will import the newer version.

Hi. I tried importing it, and also opening a new file and "placing" it, and all that shows up is a white blank square with no image in it. I can't understand how I can't even open an EPS file, even if it was created in a program newer than mine. Very weird. Thank you for everyone's suggestions however.
Mark's suggestion is very useful method for you to choose if you do not know how to
change the current eps version to be a lower version. The eps file you have must be a
a higher version ,so you can not open the eps file in Illustrator CS3.
Perhaps you can upgrade your Illustrator software, but personally it does not worth try.
I go to File>Import, choose the file and I get a box - Import as editable or Place as Encapsulated Postscript.
Both come up with a placed file.
PM me and I'll test your file if you like.

Ok, I think I got it, but the colors look slightly off. But I created a new blank page in Illustrator, hit File, then Place. I chose my file, then instead of choosing "Link" I chose "Template" and the full image came up. However, like I said, some of the colors seem a bit off compared to a jpg sample I was sent. But thank you to all of you for your suggestions...they helped me out.

The color may look different because you went from an RGB jpg to a CMYK workspace in Illustrator. Changing from RGB to CMYK will alter the colors a bit.
Just don't click the 'Link' option.
When you save the file 'link' means that the eps is not saved with the file but that there is a link to the file location. the alternative is to embed, the eps is saved with the file.
