Has anyone had success screen printing white ink base onto a black shirt and then applying a heat transfer, such as duracotton, on top of the white base?
I've heard that this is possible, and it gets great results. But I don't know what white ink to use. It would probably have to be water based since it will have to tolerate high temperatures.
The way it was described to me is the white base is first applied to the shirt. So you would screenprint the base exactly where you want the image to be placed. Then, once the ink has cured, you line up the heat transfer over the base. I was told that it wasn't difficult at all, but I have no firsthand experience.
I've also read online that the white base should be slightly smaller than the heat transfer so that a white outline will not appear around the image.

Why would you want to? To me, if you're going to go through the trouble of screenprinting a white base, you may as well screen print the image too.
