If your goal is to expand your business then I think it's a waste of time, and that you should create a Facebook Page for your company and work on attracting fans.

I have had more success with myspace. You can search more toward your target audience. For example we print for alot of MMA companies, so I did a search for "fight gear" which brought up hundreds of quality hits.

Ye, a fanpage is definitely the way to go - if it is set up as a personal page then you have access to everyones info and what not and that would deter a lot of people from joining - with a fanpage you don't have access to their info but they have access to your brand info - which is what you want..

Also, with fanpages facebook gives you lots of "badges" you can use on blogs, myspace, webpages etc to try and get fans..

Getting fans takes time and effort, but thankfully, not a lot or no money.. One thing we did which worked out nicely was a competition that people entered via our fanpage or else to ask your friends to suggest the page to their friends. From this, the viral nature of facebook may get you even more friends and then the page can start to grow organically.

Make people want to join it..offer incentives, ie 10% discounts that are only available to your facebook fans or whatever..

Good luck..

I created a facebook account to show my work until I can get my website up and running. I have actually gain a few clients by going the groups that I am interested in....horse racing.
It can't hurt.

Call me old fashioned but my definition of a friend isn't the same as facebooks!
What are you after? Friends or customers?

On the flip side, I have 30+ requests for facebook friends and I've never set-up an account. I don't know what's going on...

I have like 28 fans/friends on Facebook. Most of 'em are real friends from my personal account but a few have added me from finding my link on MySpace or my website.

I'm not sure there is an easy way to get lots of Facebook friends.

You could always be a creeper and just add everyone you see. Everywhere.

Facebook offers the ability to create an ad campaign. You are able to select your target market by location, age, gender, etc..
I don't know the cost, however it sounds like you could really narrow down your market.

Don't waste your time trying to get as many friends as possible that don't care about what your doing. Real friends are way better than fake ones. Also you can get twitter to post everything on there for your facebook. It doesn't take any extra effort if you are tweeting.
