I currently sell to Bloomingdales and Nordstrom and have been EDI exempt. I now need to become EDI compliant and supply UPC codes. I understand how EDI works but I am confused about the UPC. I spoke with a company that tells me that I have to list my catalog so that my customers can "look me up" to make their purchases. I am told that each month a customer "looks me up", it wil cost me $180. If five of these customers "look me up", it will cost $180 X 5 for that month. Is this true? I am selling t-shirts. Dont I just generate the UPC numbers for the various styles/colrs/graphics and provide them to my customers when they want to make an order? Please reply to this thread or e-mail me directly at .
Mattlevy, did they issue you a Vendor Compliance guide? If not, check with them. Some retailers supply their own hangtags with barcodes, and some require you file for them on your own. Once you have the vendor compliance guide in hand, I can help!

I have vendor compliance guides for all of them. They tell where you can get your tags printed. But that is not the issue.
The figure most often quoted is a $750 initiation fee with a $150 annual maintenance fee. When you call GS1, ask them for a small company discount, and you may get it for $500.
There are plenty other bar code suppliers out there, but GS1 remains the standard in the industry.
