On the Average... What % or Dollar amount do Illustrators expect per Shirt Sale?
Hey!
...anyone have an average or a 'ballpark' amount?
Our business will launch in the next few months, and we're going to be working with numerous designers. Basically, our designers illustrate and submit designs of their choice and we print and market them. We will offer our designers a cut of the per shirt sale...
Our product is Bamboo and we'll likely be selling our shirts in the $24-$33 range.
*What can I expect to pay my Designer's per shirt sale?
Cheers!

Most designers don't like to work like that because how will they really know how many units you truly sell? And what if you don't sell any or just a few? Most like a flat rate $ amount for their design, plus a bonus for each sale or reprint.

as a designer I would prefer a flat fee for a design (pending on an hourly design rate; $50hr) and yes a small bonus/ commission is nice and sometimes negotiated.

You can expect to pay 200-400 more if it's a big artist.
Unless your shirt.woot or an established contest site no one is going to want to take a chance on getting paid or not. That's why most artists don't work on commission and ask for a payment up front before they continue.

The rates that the artist I've worked with are generally around 300-600 dollars for a blackline and or simple spot colors, up to 1200 for pretty involved color work and 2400+ for intensive airbrush type artwork. Granted, I work with artists who design for major licenses like Nintendo, Cartoon Network, Marvel, Studio film releases, etc...

50$ for a design is low, low, low end and if you do settle on this agreement - sign something.
100$ a design is more than reasonable - sorry you highballing graphic dudes out there!
Also.. if you're nice... grant some licensing... We give up to 1.50$ per design on wholesale orders and we may have an order for 800 pcs from some of our bigger US Clients.
Not a bad pay out for a designer eh?

Who are these designers. I know some people that are pretty huge in the industry and I've never seen anything close to $2400.

From a business sense, I wouldn't give designers a % amount of the sales, because you have no idea how many shirts you may sell. You could end up paying the designers too little, or too much.
I just pay a flat rate. I found a designer in Poland that offered to do my designs for $25 each and he did a great job. Though they weren't very complex designs, just simple humorous designs with little artwork that had to be drawn out.

Looks like every agrees to a flat rate. And you're welcome.

I'm sorry but I'm not at liberty to say. My client wishes to keep his designer/artist names on the down low as it is his "secret weapon" against his competitors. Granted, I doubt it would go anywhere from this board, but all the same...
The Photoshop files that I get from these guys are tremendous though. 20-50 layers, 18" x 20" @ 200-300 dpi. Not for the faint of heart...
