how many t-shirts do REAL private labels have to sell to be viable... i assume people who print on other people's t-shirts aim in time to source their own material... but do you need a lot of money to do that from scratch or is it not considered normally practical... am interested in the transition into major brands...

I don't think it's the volume of shirts sold, it's the profit margin over a given period of time that allows you to be sustainable and ultimately expand your operation. It also depends on what you are trying to achieve.

Not necessarily, it depends on the brand. Some may want a custom garment, some just do private label programs using existing garment specs.

The biggest aspect of doing custom or private label is that it requires certain minimums. Depending on the supplier, could be a few hundred, could be a few thousand. If you're on a modest budget, it's probably not practical to do it right away. You'd be better off buying off-the-shelf garments and having them re-labeled.

That's kinda vague. There is no one way to build a brand. What major brand best describes what you want to be. Abercrombie? Affliction? T-Shirt Hell?
