I read something on-line last week while researching screening equipment, can't find again. Something about 90% (give/take) t-shirts bought being white and the preferred option by customers.
Looking for feedback on your experiences. White would be cheaper, easier to buy in big quantities and then private label.
But it seems a lot of current popular lines are various colors and rarely white?
there is a difference, if you are a clothing brand you opt for colored tees cause consumers will not buy white shirts since they get dirty very easily. If you are a printer a majority of people will purchase white shirts cause it is the cheaper option and they are usually being given away as a promotion for a business

I honestly don't think the fact that white "gets dirty very easily" is the reason why most clothing brands opt for colored tees.
I think it has a lot more to do with the fashion tastes of the market that you are selling to. Some markets will prefer a white tee, some will want black tees (almost all the geek/gamer type shirts I've seen are on black). And other colors as the market dictates. The best thing is to ask your target customers what color they prefer.

Since you found this research on a site for screenprinting equipment, it's probably based on people who are ordering tees from screenprinters. As instrumental mentioned, if someone is buying tees for promotional purposes they will probably want the cheapest option. White is the cheapest color for a shirt, and it's also probably the cheapest color to print on (some dark colored shirts might require printing white ink before the colored ink, so the printing charges will go up).
About 95% of the shirts I sell are black or charcoal.
If the site you were referencing is selling starting equipment that would be understandable since it's more difficult to print on dark shirts until you develop a groove with the white ink.

While that is a fashion statement, I think it is partly a fashion statement driven by the fact that coke doesn't show up on a black shirt.
As for the topic... I agree with what Jasonda said; white is popular for promotional shirts, but relatively unpopular for retail/fashion - so it depends on what you're doing.
