You might try this software:

Free Microsoft 2007 Accounting Software

I don't know if it has inventory management capabilities though.

We use Quickbooks Pro.
Have you thought about using a simple Excel spreadsheet to track your inventory? We do inventory each month in Excel and move the $totals in to QB Pro. We have about a 1,000 garments in stock.

although my inventory isnt as large as 1000, i use excel as well. Excel is crazy powerful if you can harness the lighting into the flux capacitor and coding... coding is important.

i used to work at Dell Corp... and they used Excel sheets for everything with some mad algorithms. pages and pages with thousands of rows with worksheet to worksheet linking. mad i tell you!

i also work at a tshirt shop. they use excel too.

stick with quickbooks, (Pro or enterprise). After you learn and practice all the features, you'll find that it's a good tool for the business. If you're able to encode all your transactions, youl'll appreciate the inventory and other report features.

Start with excel but try to learn quickbooks in the meantime. Excel is really great, and with that amount of product even with beginner/intermidiate skills you should be just fine. Later when you have learned quickbooks and want to keep all in one place you can export your excel data into it. I think this will save you a lot of headache at this point.

I started with Excel, then moved to an MS Access Database, still wasn't happy. Moved to Quickbooks Pro, took me a LOT longer to get the inventory set up the way I wanted. Now that it's set up, it's not that bad to maintain. It's not the most intuitive software I've ever used but then again, it's designed for accountants...

I do find that it forces me to keep better track of things however.

Free Microsoft 2007 Accounting Software has not inventory capability in its free version, only service and non-inventory. If you want it, you have to buy the inventory module.
