Since this question comes up, to often in fact, I'm hoping we can create a no nonsense thead with various shipping rates.
I'm from the USA, shipping via USPS planning on the following:
Domestic: $5 flat + $1 per item (variable box)
Canada: $7.50 flat + $1 per item (large envelope up to 3, box from there)
World: $10 flat + $2 per item (large envelope up to 3, box from there)
Casey, it depends on what company you use and which service. For example, you can use USPS Priority 3-day service to ship a shirt that will cost $4.05 (coast to coast), but for the same thing with FedEx will cost you $10.

Since we use PayPal to take orders, we end up with $4.55 for shipping for 1 shirt, which costs $4.05 using Priority Mail in the US. 2 shirts costs the same, and at either 3 or 4 it gets more expensive. Shipping internationally by USPS Air Mail usually costs about $5-$6 for 1 shirt.

Hmm. Air Mail does seem to be the way to go. But I'm assuming you have to go out and purchase your own envelopes then... but the savings are very, very good. What kind of delivery time do you expect on the average air mail package?

At the lower end sometimes Global Priority is cheaper, sometimes Air Mail is cheaper.

Speaking as someone who is on the other end of USPS's airmail service, it's pretty good. Generally US to Australia is 5 to 10 days global priority and 7-20 days airmail. Depending on the timing of when things are sent, it can take the same amount of time with either.

I just take the TyVek Priority envelopes (which I use for domestic shipping) and turn them inside out... not quite the best way to do it, but so far it's worked. I really don't know about delivery times, but Lewis does!
I like to keep things easy and simple. I might lose some but I don't know yet. I've only sold 4 shirts to the US and none outside.
Once I get esablished more I'll evaluate it and change it around.
I'd like to keep things simple as well, but it can be kind of difficult.
The US, Canada, and the rest of the world all require a different set of rates.
As well, once more than 3 or so shirts are ordered, shipping internationally can become very expensive. In fact, I've determined that it can be cheaper to ship the order in 2 different shipments, depending on the number of items purchased of course.
Well, I've setup rates for the US, and it seems to run fine with a $5 + $1 per item system. Even a blank 10.1 - 25.00 bulk parcel at $20 seems to work good.
So for anyone wondering, that's a safe bet. Now onto Canada and the rest of the world. Which is of course much, much more difficult. With the advent of flat rate packages customers will think your screwing them by charging more than $10 for 3 or less shirts, and from there the postage absolutely explodes price wise.
< 3 shirts = $9.50
4 and 5 shirts = $25.25
Anyone figure out a way to do the world that looks good to both the customer and your own pocketbook yet? Thanks.
