Ideas aren't copyrighted, it's specifically their implementation that is protected. Were you to screen print a clownish portrait or make a sculpture out of a urinal you don't have to worry about Warhol and Duchamp's estates coming after you. Likewise no-one has a monopoly on road signs as a motif.
On the other hand, it is possible to inadvertently step on someone's toes when it comes to copyright and trademark. So we can't give you a definitive answer, but working in the same genre as someone else is not enough to be a problem on its own.
