Hi All,

I like old school vintage signs, and so I’ve been playing around with a few designs etc to put on t’s. I then started having a look around what was out there, and my designs look extremely similar to others as they are in the same ‘style’ ie like a square vintage sign with similar kind of fonts etc but totally different words. I haven’t used any pictures yet just the shapes of the signs and fonts so they look like just a slightly different version of some I have now found, and now I am totally bummed. Is this infringing on copyright issues?

I suggest that you contact an intellectual property attorney, unless there is one on the forum.

As Ed said, you'd need to contact an IP lawyer to get the best answer.

Ideas aren't copyrighted, it's specifically their implementation that is protected. Were you to screen print a clownish portrait or make a sculpture out of a urinal you don't have to worry about Warhol and Duchamp's estates coming after you. Likewise no-one has a monopoly on road signs as a motif.

On the other hand, it is possible to inadvertently step on someone's toes when it comes to copyright and trademark. So we can't give you a definitive answer, but working in the same genre as someone else is not enough to be a problem on its own.
