First and foremost, the tag needs to look good itself.
From there, personally I think there are two different but perfectly reasonable approaches: use different tags on different shirts, matching the look of the tag to the look of the shirt. Or use the same tag on every shirt, keeping consistent brand colours and image.
If you don't have consistent brand colours, then it makes sense to have the tag always match the shirt. But if you choose to put forth a consistent brand image instead, that's fine too.
Whatever you do, do it well. Beyond that, there are next to no absolutes.
