Hi .. I am just starting to research this as well. What I have found so far is, most events charge you by the size of your tent/canopy. A 10x10 is the most standard size. There is an EZ Pop up brand that could be set up by one person, but from what I understand it really takes 2.

The events usually have applications you have to fill out, some asking for pictures of your "tent" set up with merchandise in it. Most ask that you submit proof of commercial liability insurance too.

That's what I have learned so far, but will be anxious to read what others say that do this.

You generally will not be allowed to sell at large events such as Superbowl, Jazzfest; they generally have their own merchandise to sell, and don't want any outside competition. You'll have to research each event individually; as each will have their own costs, rules, regulations, etc. Also, some counties require you have a sales license, so don't be surprised if you get all setup, and a county sales tax official comes around to your booth, and either informs you that you cannot sell without a license, or offers to sell you a temporary license for a fee. Generally does not happen at smaller events, but things like fairs, festivals, etc; the county wants their share of sales tax revenue, and usually send officials around to make sure all sellers are licensed. Be prepared. Also, just about all outdoor venues will NOT offer any booth space refunds for bad weather.

Just an off the wall suggestion, I am marketing my own line of fishing shirts, and here are my experiences with events that are pay to play DONT BOTHER unless of course you have $100,00.00 to pass out.
I have went down that path only to find minimull results, the crowd was to old or to young it was to windy, it was raining, there are alot of variables to working these events that i cant live with.
I had my shirts in 16 tackle shops for four months on consignment a catastrophy, after spending hundreds of dollars on gas checking on my shirts oh and 3 shops going out of business and taking shirts with them I decided to pull all my shirts out of the shops and take matters into my own hands.
I am not sure where you are from but within 5 miles of my house there are 18 abandon gas stations, HMMM so today i spent 10.00 in gas 10.00 in food and drinks and set up my display to sell my shirts.
Prime location 1800 cars per hour passed through this intersection i sold more shirts today than all 16 of those tackle shops did in 4 months.
Now this isnt for everybody at first i was apprehinsive but I overcame all of that when shirts started selling.
The police dont care its not there job, the civil servants only work 9-5 monday through friday but there
arent going to go above and beyond there lazy-boy to do anything about it.
One more point its not just selling t-shirts if you are in the mist building a brand name consider this, today i exposed my display and brand name to 15,000 people i would bet at least 5,000 of them read my logo
and absorbed the feel of my brand.
And i have 17 other locations to try. AMERICA YA GOTTA LOVE IT
When the local government figures out that gas stations are being abandon in drooves and finds a way to profit from it you wont be able to do this so if you need me i will be at my new 5 million dollar location
BUT JUST FOR THE DAY

Thumbs up Re: selling t-shirts on the road

Try Google using "Festivals' as search criteria. This may help you find events in your area. You can ask the organizer any questions about permits, taxes, etc. Happy hunting!

GOOD OLD FASHIONED GORILLA MARKETING
Like i said the civil servants that are supposed to stop you from doing this arent working on weekends.
But there could come a time when they set up a task force to deal with people like me but until then
I will continue to adapt to the geneticly engineered economic distress that we as small business gorillas
must deal with.
This isnt for everyone but i have more B---- THAN BRAINS so i just figure i dont know any better.

to be a street vendor which is labeled "peddler" you do need a permit , some cities require a bond as well. And unfortunately most cities like mine, in Memphis, don't allow peddling unless its farm produce (retarded right?) So what i used to do is set up on the weekends since Code Enforcement doesn't work weekends and the police really don't care. It was good money , sales of 500-600 for the weekend

i've had this happen couple times. I was put in jail for a couple of days for continuing to do it. These clowns try and come down hard on someone trying to make an honest living , whereas these drug dealers go under the radar

The police actually arrested you? What was the charge?
considering it is a civil violation and not criminal, I hope you arent posting from jail. at any rate that is what they will have to do to me but i watch the news and i have never seen anyone arrested for this
I actually ask a cop when i was set up and he said the only way i will arrest you is if you are acting like an idiot

No I'm not writing from jail haha. I would get code enforcement show up randomly on weekend and write me a citation. I figure no big deal ill pay the $90 ticket and go back right? I was making good money. I constantly changed locations so the could never know where I was. Eventually they found me and this time they went to my court date to ask judge for more than just a fine. I was furious at how ridiculous the whole thing was. When judge asked me why I continue to do it I said I can't get a decent job and I would buy a permit if they offered one and I don't want to get money from the government (welfare) thinking to myself the judge will see my point. Wrong! Had to spend 48 hours in jail for it. Crazy but every bit true
