so do you think the best route for me is to order my american apparel blanks from a wholesaler who does labeling/tagging (like tsc apparel), then have them shipped to the printer?
this is a good option. I have used tsc for relabeling & they do a great job. One downside is that they don't open the neck tape to slide you label in and close it up. They sew your label right on top of the garment. If you are wanting to sell your tees in retail I would suggest finding a local printer that offers relabeling services. Depending on the printer/embroider ,manufacturers will offer relabeling over the neck tape, or opening the seam & putting your label in. The second way is slightly higher in price, but well worth it because it gives your garment that professional custom touch.
Do you think labels make a difference to the sale or is this about establishing a brand?
If it is about the brand - do you make that part of your site name or do you run a jazzy label that is not reflected in your site name. I ask this as it is impossible to register a decent URL that would match a branmd that appeals to me.

I think it makes a difference on the sale of a tee. I see labels (printed or woven) as a part of your marketing costs. .30 -.50 cents a tee is not that much to invest in getting your names in peoples heads. I would definitely suggest adding your URL somewhere on the label. Even though your site name doesn't necessarily reflect your brand name, this is helpful for people to pass the word along as well as finding out more about your line. Having your labels printed inside the neck is a good way to start. You have the option of putting a lot of content in a small amount of space. Woven labels limit what content you put on it for price & size reasons. I have our company name, website, catchphrase, size, & what the tee is made of. Adding washing instructions is a must for retail goods. this also protects you from an unhappy client you washes their shirt wrong

Well it's the easiest option, which is usually the best option
Sourcing relabelling can be annoying/difficult. If you have a cheaper local source that might give you more flexibility and save some money. But if you don't, it's certainly a lot easier to get it all handled closer to the source.
I'm not sure what TSC charges for their re-labeling services, or if they have a min. I would suggest looking into some local seamstresses to sew them for you. No min order, supporting someone in your community, and getting away from a low-bugdet looking label because its sewn in over the top of the tape. For around $.30-$50 you should find one that will remove and sew in your new label, many times without even noticing it was ever done.

im still very confused as to how i go from having the blanks in my hand, to having them with tags on them
for my brand, im looking to have a tag at the bottom of the shirt folded ove to the back, much like johnny cupcakes and LRG shirts have. i also want a tag in the back of the neck
im sorry if im frustrating anyone with my question, i just dont know much about it at all :/
there are a bunch of answers on this thread to answer your question, but it comes down mainly to your manufacture(printer) or local seamstress & their capabilities. You first have to order the labels, then you just tell the person that is going to sew them the placement you want, the color of thread, etc & you are all set. then your blanks go from blanks to retail quality look in no time
thanks amb3r but i think the problem is that im not sure what a label/tag is exactly...
im talking about the pieces of cloth that are stitched into the back of the shirt..is that known as a tag or a label? and as for the pieces of paper/cardboard that show the size/style etc. that are connected to the shirt by the plastic wire thing, do i need these? what are these called? who does these? etc.
