Default license agreements

I have seen shirts with popular characters on them from movies and video games, how do you go about getting permission to use that stuff. I would assume it would be illegal to just print a video game character on your shirt. Please help

Either contact the property owner and negotiate a license, or use pre-existing licensed merchandise (transfers or finished product) from a legitimate re-seller.

Yes.

So lets say I wanted to use Mario for example like I have seen on shirts. I could either contact nintendo or what did you mean by use a ligitimate reseller. Are you saying they are allowed to let me use their stuff they have an agreement for?

Confused

Thank you for the response and hopefully you can clarify.

I do understand the first part about contacting the original owner of the property, it is the second part I am confused on

I'm saying their are companies that wholesale licensed apparel (and transfers), you can buy at wholesale prices, and onsell at retail.

So if you want your Mario design on a t-shirt you'll need to work out a licensing agreement with Nintendo, but if you just want to sell a cool Mario t-shirt, then you might be able to find one already available that you can buy and re-sell at a profit.

Sometimes there are companies that have bought complete rights to a property and can sub-license it, but that's unusual (normally the original owner would like to retain more control than that).

Thanks, that is what I figured. I called them yesterday and sat on hold forever listening to Super Mario Bros. theme song.

Thanks again for the help and the clarification.
