It depends where your strengths are, how much capital you have to spare, what you want to spend your timing doing, etc.
Assuming you can pick up the skill of screenprinting relatively quickly (which may not be the case) then yes you save money per item. On the other hand you now have less time to pack orders, design your website, do your bookkeeping, etc.
You can't do
everything yourself, so you need to figure out which are the areas you should be doing, and which you need to outsource. If you don't already know how to print, it would be worth seriously considering outsourcing.
Personally I didn't take that route though - I learnt to print because I wanted to learn to print. I have no regrets, so if you want to do the same I'd say go for it.
But if you don't actually want to print - you're just doing it to save some money, or to avoid the hassle of finding a printer - I'd say you're better off paying someone else to do that particular task, and spending more time doing the things you do want to be doing.
