I'm contacting you with regard to a link exchange between our web sites.
Your website has been ranking high on Google for related terms (i.e.
Brand Clothing, Designer Clothes, Designer Shirts) so I thought a
reciprocal link exchange would add value to both our sites in the search
engines.
this is the 1st kind of email i have got, is it legit?

I would consider that email as spam (I got the same exact email to 5 different email addresses).
I hate "template" sounding link exchange emails like that and I usually dump them in the trash bin.
I would be more willing to consider a link exchange email if it was personalized, didn't blab on about pagerank and how it's going to benefit me to exchange with them, etc.
The e-mail looks like spam we get these all the time, you have to check the site, and see if a recp link would be worth it, but realize that thye probably sent this e-mail to about 100-900 other websites.

One thing to consider with messages like this is "Is it even true of my site?" - if it's not actually true, you know it's spam. As a new site BrutalTees has a page rank of zero, and doesn't rank well (or at all I imagine) for any of the "related terms" the e-mail says it is "ranking high on Google" with. If pretty much every single thing it says is false... how can it be legit?
I just got one the other day too, trying to do a three-way set up (which is done to try to trick search engines into thinking they aren't exchanged links and are instead 3 one-way links). So dumb; Somehow I don't think getting a return link from free-gambling-online (or whatever the heck it actually was) is going to help me much ;)

If your able to get a link to ANY site that has lots of traffic it can benefit you. It doesnt cost anything why wouldnt you?
You should be aware of your search engine ranking and that should tell you if its crap. Just send an email to them to follow up. Dont ever pass up an opportunity to get a link unless maybe its something that you disagree with or is obscene etc.

Lots of reasons. I'd rather have no 'links' page or whatever at all than to link out to a bunch of unrelated crap sites that aren't relevant and don't help my customers at all. In addition, sites that try to get in schemes like this with you - especially if they are generic/spamish from unrelated sites - will almost always have even less traffic than my own modest traffic.
Exchanges like this might end up hurting my SE Rankings really. At the very best, they help only slightly with the negative of looking gawdy and not helping my customers. Related websites is the way to go - both customers AND search engines will find them more useful and worthwhile.
Ahh, the female voice of reason that keeps all of us men from doing crazy things. I too am always sceptical when I get things on the internet. You link up and all of a sudden all your potential customers are being diverted. I'd do some checking first. Has anyone taken advantage of one of these emails?
