Default The right to use a font?

Hi All,

I have gone along merrily creating designs for my shirts, and a retailer who is looking to stock some of my stuff has just asked about my right to use a particular font.

The font is "Jokewood" and TBH, it was on my computer, I figured it came with some software I'd installed at some time or another, so I used it. Now I'm paranoid I've done the wrong thing and we'll all get sued!

How do I know which Fonts I have the right to use for commercial purposes? Are the designs I have done that incorporate Wingdings or Webdings characters OK?

Any clues?

Thanks!

Hi Kath.

I suggest, as a font designer:

First of all - don't panic.
There is a content of EULA, that is distributed with Jokewood font (via http://www.dafont.com/jokewood.font ) :
Quote:
"Thank you for downloading Fontalicious Fonts!

If you are using this font for commercial use, please purchase the postscript package for $15, available by instant download on the website.

Just get the proper commercial licence, and I think that should be enough (hope so).

All fonts contain info about the author, or legal owner and If you are not sure about forms of usage that are allowed - contact them. Or/and read the licence agreement that are almost always distributed with particular font.
If there is not such licence file, use google to find the distributor or font author.

Greg

How would anyone know you used their font? So many look the same and on something like a shirt it could have been something that you created yourself. Right?

Greg - Thanks for that. I'll have to look into buying a commercial license for it.

mrtoad - Most of the fonts I'd use on a t-shirt are fairly distinctive. Jokewood, for instance, doesn't really look "like" anything else.

Wrong. They may look similar, but not the same. There are many ways to prove that somebody is the author of particular artwork.

I suggest you to read this carefully. It will clarify you aspects (both legal and ethical) of such behaviour.

But of course, there is always a chance that nobody will sue you... I don't think that it is worth the risk.

funtimesx My pleasure. I'm glad that you have asked about that, at all :-)
