Default Are you guys making a good living from selling t-shirts?

Hey everyone,

I don't post in this forum enough to know everyone and what individual members do. Forgive me.

But my basic question is; are you guys who have their own t-shirt range, doing it as a living? Are you making good money out of it?

You don't have to discuss specifics, I know it's pretty personal.

I'm one of those people who does this whole t-shirt thing as a bit of an EBAY hobby, just to make money on the side. Up until now.

I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life and I'm wondering if I could and should pursue this thing further and see how big it can become.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I am sure it all depends on a lot of things but if you are doing ebay and making maoney and want to give it a try there is nothing stopping you and you may be a huge success but you will not know until you try.

I say go for it and good luck, it can become as big as you want it to be with the right customers

I am also doing this on the side due to me being in highschool still. But im making a very large profit on it. You will make as much as you put into it. Best of luck

DO IT! Make the jump and take the risk. If you don't, you'll look back years from now and ask "what if...", and you'll wonder what you could've done with your life.

I'm just getting started in the t-shirt world, but I'm in college (for engineering, lol) and willing to risk it all to start my own clothing company. I just invested all of my money into getting t-shirts printed, and supplies for the company, etc. To be honest, I'd rather design and sell clothes than be an engineer, any day.

GOOD LUCK!

What do you consider 'good money'?

'Good Money' is quoted in the dictionary as...
"just enough to not have to work for someone else".

If you can pay all your bills, that's 'good money'.

Hehe...

Anything above that is just simple 'greed', mixed with the less controversial 'ambition'...
and because there isn't a single person on this forum that would turn down more money,
"infinite" would be the only answer left after the quote above.

You can make a living with t-shirts, but it's not necessarily easy.

I've been studying online marketing for almost 10 years now (web & graphic design for over 10 years) and I'm only making a little more than my bills with t-shirts...
of course, I'm not implementing everything I know due to financial limitations (read: being wise & diligent with advertising), time constraints, the pursuit of happiness, etc.

The point is, if you don't know much about doing business online (building websites, creating banners ads, pay-per-click advertising, SEO, trading links, reading traffic statistics, graphic design, etc), then you have a long road ahead of you...so get started = NOW!!!!

Some people get it done by throwing money at it (hire someone to do what they don't want to learn themselves)...
but that's usually not a feasible business model, since an SEO company will charge you $250/hour to handle your search engine optimization needs...a t-shirt printer requires huge orders in order to offer a decent discount...good graphic designers don't work for peanuts...etc.

Nobody will build your business for you, for cheap.
And that places the burden of knowledge upon the business owner.
How much you earn, is directly related to how much you learn.*

*Of course, Luck is always a factor that's out of our control.

The bottom line...every product can be sold.
The questions is, do you know how to sell it?

We have 1 customer that we print and ship for that has sold over 15k of 1 design since mid August. It was about timeing in the market for them. So yes you can make decent money. Most people can not make a living to support a family but some can. Takes hard work, dedication, persaverance (sp?), and some luck. But as I like to say you can not make the shot if you are not willing to take it.

I'd be curious to see that design, do they have a website?
(You don't need to tell us which design it is, but their site would be an interesting look-see.)

Anyway, the problem with what you just mentioned (timing) is that it's likely "hooker money"...it never lasts.

Everyone can play the "movie (or politics) game" and try to release designs relevant to current affairs...
but those current affairs quickly become old news and stop selling.

Can you imagine how many shirt-peddlers are stuck with "George Bush" shirts right now?
I shudder at the thought.

Never design for the quick-buck...it's just that.

We've been in business a little over a year (bout a year and 3 months). My company consists of a three way LLC with me, my mother, and my former employer whom is primarily a financial backer. We haven't made a fortune, we cover the bills, I take a pittance for a salary, but we're constantly growing and building. We're not a t-shirt only business, as our local market couldn't handle that and I'm still learning about online marketing.

We produce signage, t-shirts, and other promotional items using all the different methods available: DTG (Brother GT541), Print/Cut vinyl (Roland SP300), dye sublimation (C88 w/ Artainium, and plastisol heat transfers (usually stock transfers from other companies). We also have a fairly decent sized retail store to showcase our abilities and provide items that are lacking in our small community. We did not turn a profit this year, which is to be expected for new businesses, but we've reinvested most of the money back into the business to obtain new equipment.

Hi! I am new to this site. I think the shirt business is very good if you have good quality and the design is great!

How did that guy sell 15,000 t-shirts? Did he sell online, brick & mortar, or what? How did he advertise it?

I make enough to live on and I'm gonna make a lot more in 2009!

Yes they were politcal shirts. Showed up #1 back then for obama shirts. Orders came from indiviuals, families, rallys, and other resellers. They were ship to Brazil, Germany, Italy to name a few of the countries. This was totally on line. Used some Google ads but showing up on the search engines was the reason.

I have been selling concert t-shirts at numerous venues around the Detroit area. The work is fun but I often work long hours. We make really good money for what we do, however, this is not my only job.
