it seems to be a common wisdom on this forum that it's is too expensive for the little guys to protect their designs from theft. that's talking about using the normal legal system. last year i sold my old auto press to another screen print shop. when they got the press set up they ask if i would help set up the 1st job. the boss said the art came from a member in europe. i noticed that there was no copyright on the art, then i thought silly me these guys are hell's angles and they don't need copy rights. heck you wouldn't survive the cease and desist order. anyone smug enough to think they can borrow designs at will and the legal system will be there to protect them just might borrow from the wrong person who doesn't limit themselves to the legal system to find resolve. be careful.

Is it that they don't need a copyright or maybe they just don't care? Don't they like to live outside the system?
Of course, if I were going to steal a design, it wouldn't be from the Hell's Angels. What a great way to invite trouble from the law. I've talked to bikers here who get pulled over just because they're wearing their colors. Why invite trouble?
I beleive what he is trying to say is this.......................... Some guy steals Hells Angels logo for T Shirt...... no copyright on said logo..... but hey, wait a minute...... those feckers don't need copyrights!!!! They will dish out their own law!!!!...........................
As if the Hells Angels would go banging down doors of some random T Shirt printer for doing their logo.... Anyway they ruddy steal and alsorts so the irony in that would be great, but alas.... doubt it.. bigger things to do like...write books and sell drugs...
this post was in response to a closed thread from a member of this forum who was considering borrowing all of his designs from us without asking. he was thinking that the legal aspect was all he had to worry about. my post was to let him know that there are still some out there who don't play by the rules. the post is not about stealing from the hell's angels, it's about stealing from everyone until you steal from the wrong one. stan
My neighbor here in Oakland is friends with some angels, told me a story about a skateboard shop that used one of their designs. They came in and took everything with their art and then some and the shop owner didn't say a word. Don't effaround. Careful whose toes you step on...

This one's a doozy (above) and I'm surprised ruffrydah1983 even posted something like that on this forum... He angrified some folks, and brought some other people like him to light too...
We've printed for a group of Ruff Ryders before from Sacramento. They're a christian motorcycle crew, I believe. I wonder if his moniker is related to that motorcycle crew and if you're Hell's Angels analogy is intentional based on that...
no dan, i was just trying to help this poor guy out......... before it's to late. this forum has 66,000 members and i'm pleased to say only a few are like him. enough said. peace and happy holidays. stan
Wow I just read that post. The nerve of this one. I hope he fails. It's because of people like him in the corporate world that ruined our economy. Doing unethical things to make a quick buck. Luckily, I copyrighted my designs with my comics as additional art so I hope he copies my idea and makes alot of money so I can sue the crap out of him lol.
However, he brings up an interesting point. I've seen t-shirts with Chuck Norris on it with a Chuck Norris joke on it. I looked at the copyright laws about this and it says that names can't be copyrighted but what about celeb's faces and such? I thought that you had to have permission and such but then someone said that you don't. For example there's a lot of Obama shirts with his face on it and I know for a fact that this company didn't get his permission to print them. They're not even sending a penny to him or his campaign, which I think is very unethical. But when I was reading about the copyright law it says that if you make a satire of someone it allowed, like SNL making fun of Sarah Palin or comic editorials using faces of famous people. Any thoughts?
One other thing, if you have art you can copyright it for $35 at the Copyright office. If you have a lot you can submit it as a series. However, the law states that once you have your work completed it's automatically protected, it's just that you have to prove you designed it yourself. So if you have a website and you are selling on there and you can prove that you've been selling it on there before the other guy then that's the evidence. However $35 will get help you prove it with less headache.
Ultimately, and i read some of what was posted in the locked thread, that bloke is clearly not a creative mind, like alot of the [people] in T Shirt land. I'm a 3 year trained Graphic Designer and did a 4 year Fine Art Degree................ so for me to steal someone elses design would never happen, it comes down to integrity dosen't it. Oh well, from what i can see, he'll do well in the T Shirt world, the most saturated market full of mostly total embarasing cr@p, in the most part, most T shirts i see are just destroying a perfectly good blank.

Certainly, the world of legal copyright infringement is filled with hypocrisy.
Hell's Angels logos also evolved from copying aviation military insignias.
The Howard Hughes film Hell's Angels was a major film of 1927 before the motorcycle clan was founded, so even their name ain't original.
Anyway, check out all these high profile lawsuits, they go around in circles with accuser and accused constantly switching roles. Film Lawsuit
Copyright is about "legal" ownership not moral rights, and copyright of art is often not owned nor credited to the original creator.

For celebrities, you DO have to get their permission to use their likeness.

This is different because images of political figures are in the public domain - IF they are not under copyright by someone else. In other words you can draw Obama and sell that artwork on a shirt, but you can't copy Shepard Fairey's artwork of Obama and sell it on a shirt (though plenty of people have).
