Default Printing to order?

I'm currently in process of putting out our company's first tshirt. My husband and I own a dog training club and private off-leash park. A number of our members have been bugging us to get some tshirts and I'm finally at a point to move ahead. I've almost finalized my design and shirt and am hoping to find a printer in the next week or so. Anyway, our club currently has about 70 members (90 if you count the spouses). I don't think everyone will want a tshirt, but am hoping to be able to sell some additional shirts through our website.
I know my daughter's elementary school does their shirts on order, they somehow get a shirt of each size printed and then take orders at the school's open house and fall festival, then everyone gets their shirts when the entire order is done.
I'm thinking this is the wise way for me to go. I'd like to get a sample set printed, then take orders from club members. I'll then order additional shirts of what I think(hope and pray) will be the most common sizes and distribute the pre-sold shirts and then sell the rest on the site. I'm hoping to add more designs for the different types of dog sports our clients participate in.
Is this feasible? I know schools can do it, but can I?
Thanks all,
Annette

Default Re: Printing to order?

Annette: First let me explain the steps in printing a shirt. From your art the colors must be separated unless it 4 color process, then film positives made fore each color, burn the screens, one for each color, set up and register on the machine. When this is done your ready to print. With an automatic machine you can print 5-6 hundred an hour, but the printer has already spent a minimum of two hours getting it ready plus the cost of screens and emulsion.
To do what you want the above has to be done, for 3-4 samples then break down the machine, clean and save the screens for your reorder. Printers do this for Schools as they know the will sell hundreds year after year.
I suggest you order 36 shirts in a mix of sizes and reorder if they sell.
Good Luck, John
