Default Legality of certain images

Hi. I am new here and did a search but didnt find a good answer to my question. What are the legal issues (if any) for using fine art (example: Mona Lisa) ,logos (of defunct companies) or poster/ pamphlet images from the 19th and early 20th century? Any input will be appreciated.

Here is a good starting point PDTool

Ultimately though, the only sure way of knowing is to talk to the source of the material or to an attorney.

If it predates the 20s you're good to go (as far as copyright goes that is - trademark could still be an issue, but rarely). After that, it's a big confusing mess thanks to a patchwork of terribly short sighted copyright laws. Defunct companies might still technically exist and have maintained their trademark.
