Hi, I produce a range of handmade children's clothing and part of the range want to produce a run of printed shirts using a design we have created.

I have been reading and reading on all the various printing methods and their pro's and cons, but I am still not sure on what method would give us the result we are after.

I thought digitex was the way to go, however have since learned that the design would need to be weeded and thus costly.

The type of image we wish to have created is for example if you imagine a hand drawing of a kid like house. The drawing has no colouring in, but we want the lines of the house to be featured in black and the colour of the shirt to be the only colour.

We would also be interested in small runs of shirts. Quality is also important, we want a process that will be hard wearing for kids.

We had hoped to use AA shirts as we already use them for our other clothing.

Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Since it's a one color image, and it sounds like a fairly simple design, custom cut vinyl may be the way to go. Personally, that's what I would do.

While screen printing would work nicely, you would have to produce fairly large quantities of shirts (or plastisol transfers) for it to be cost effective.

If you do go with screen printing, I would suggest plastisol transfers as opposed to prinitng directly on the shirts. You would still need to purchase a fairly large quantity, but, you could then use those transfers to print on demand.

Printing on demand allows you to print only those sizes and colors for which you have orders.

For a one colour design you don't necessarily need to print many to be cost effective. I'd recommend screenprinting, but if the short runs are an issue there, I'd recommend DTG printing.

Wew wouldn't require that large of a run for screen printing 1 color. I'd start printing for someone with 24 shirts, maybe less.

Thank you for your suggestions. I did go to see one of two screenprinters in town this morning, who was rude and unhelpful, so am hoping the remaining one is better - and they say to shop local .

I really appreciate the help
