Default Help me understand fabric types...

Is there a place I can look at the different types of fabric weaves? Combed ring-spun, cotton pique, jersey, etc...

While looking through my catalog for shirts, I have noticed lots of shirts that I really like, but I'm concerned that screen printing on them may not do well. I've printed on Jersey knit shirts before with no problems, but what about the other types of weaves? Anyone have any guidance on what type of fabric weave I should stay away from for screen printing?

Depends on your artwork. Depends on the look you are going for.

I think everything but "pique" is ok for screen printing. Pique is generally for embroidery.

Some catalogs have a list of terms defined. If not, you can usually find that list on the wholesalers website.

Here's a nice glossary from SanMar: SanMar : Marketing Tools : Glossary

There are different types of fabric. Woven, knitted, silk, cotton, etc. Its just a matter of choosing the right one and will depends of your idea on how you can use it as your master piece. Sometimes combining a different fabric makes your works great.

Dear Tim,

There are different type of fabrics, Woven, non woven and Knitted fabrics.
Woven fabrics are nothing but making fabrics by interlacing warp and weft yarns.
Non woven fabrics are made without interlacing yarns they are quite different.

But the knitted fabrics are the type u are using for T shirts. These are called as knitted fabrics and having different type of fabric structures such as 1x1 rib, 2x2 rib, honey comb, Interlock, Loopknit, Pique, jersey ete etc....

Woven fabrics are using for making shirts, pants , trousers which are hard and durable.

But the knitted fabrics are use for casual wear only. U can print on both Woven and Knitted fabrics according to the fabric structure.

Hope this basic informations are useful to u.

If you wish to get into the different types of fabrics you could try www.ftc.gov/bamboo-it is
pretty heavy reading but immensely interesting.
